Flossing Habits That Do More Harm Than Good

Posted .

Did you know there are flossing habits that can harm your smile rather than help it? Well, it’s true, unfortunately. This means you need to be very careful while you’re flossing. You want a top-notch oral health and smile, right? So, it’s best to avoid bad flossing habits. To help you do so, our dentist, Dr. Kevin M. Altieri, is happy to list the bad flossing habits here:

-Forcing the floss into place: If you force the floss between your teeth, it can jab into the gums. When it jabs into the gums, it irritates the gums. This can make the gums bleed and it can even make them pull away from the teeth. It’s best to be gentle as you floss. To help get the floss into place, use a gentle sawing motion.

-Using a flossing product that is hard to use: If you’re not able to easily maneuver the floss, there is a bigger chance you’ll force the floss into place and harm the oral tissues. So, make sure you use a product that you can use easily, like waxed floss, a flossing pick, a floss threader or a water flosser.

-Not flossing once a day: If you fail to floss daily, the plaque and bacteria can build up on the teeth and gumline and promote dental issues, like cavities and periodontal disease.
